Beyond a number on a report.

Use independent documentation alongside the actual stone, not instead of it.

Check the issuing laboratory

Use the report number on the laboratory’s official report-check service. Compare the retrieved record with the document supplied for your selection. Do not treat a third-party screenshot as the only evidence.

The report must describe the proposed stone, not a similar example. Read the material and growth-origin disclosure. For laboratory-grown diamonds, assessment terminology may vary by report format; do not assume every laboratory uses identical labels.

Read the complete description

Compare shape, weight and measurements, and the reported quality information where present. Look at the comments and disclosure of growth method or treatment. For fancy colour, the actual hue and any colour-treatment disclosure matter alongside the descriptive colour line.

A coating and a post-growth treatment are not interchangeable descriptions. Ask specifically what has been disclosed for the selected stone, and request clarification if the document does not answer your requirements.

Match the document to the stone

Where a laser inscription is present, compare it with the report number using appropriate equipment. Inscription alone is not a complete identity test: the stone’s weight, measurements and other available identifying features should also be consistent.

Our client-care approach records available identifiers before handover and compares them on return. An independent qualified gemmological laboratory may be appropriate when an identity question cannot be resolved from the available record.

Keep the decision visual, too

Ask for imagery of the actual stone and discuss its face-up appearance with a jewellery professional. A report is valuable evidence, but a grade does not tell you everything about the way a particular stone will look in your chosen setting.

General selection guidance. The details of an actual stone and the terms of any order must be confirmed separately.
